OCR scanned PDFs and images, offline

Extract editable text from scans, photos and image-only PDFs without uploading them. Recognition runs on your device with the Tesseract engine.

How to OCR a scanned PDF

  1. Open the OCR tool and pick the document language and a quality level (Fast, Balanced or Best Accuracy).
  2. The first time, the app downloads the language data once (about 25 MB). After that it is stored on your device.
  3. Drop in a scanned PDF or PNG/JPG images and copy or download the recognized text.

Why use PDF Tools Pro

15 languages

English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).

Runs offline

After the one-time language download, OCR works with no connection, which also makes it suitable for sensitive paperwork.

Choose speed or accuracy

Fast is good for clean printouts; Best Accuracy takes longer but handles harder scans better.

Optional AI clean-up

If you want, AI Enhance can reformat, summarize or translate the extracted text. It only sends text after you confirm each request.

Free and Pro

Free plan: 5 OCR scans a month, including 1 in a language other than English. Pro is unlimited. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

Questions

Is OCR really done on my computer?

Yes. The Tesseract OCR engine runs inside your browser or the Windows app. Your scans are not uploaded.

Why is there a download the first time?

OCR needs trained language data. It downloads once per language and is then stored locally, so later scans work offline.

Can it read handwriting?

It works best on printed text. Neat handwriting may be partly recognized, but results vary.

Can I get a Word file from a scan?

Run OCR to get the text, or use PDF to Word for PDFs that already contain a text layer.
